Soon after I moved to Los Angeles from Bloomington, Indiana, my friend Mark McCormick (guitar) invited me to the visceral “Anti-Club” in Hollywood to see his band Crawlspace. Eddie posted the shot to his bio, and over the many years, it is consistently in my top Google results. I don’t know where the original is - probably (fittingly) in my garage somewhere.

First Responders : LAFD Station 27, Hollywood, California

Last week I took Jasper to the LAFD Museum. It is also the home to the Fallen Firefighters Memorial. We had a great time and Jasper made a new friend. When I got home and looked at the shots, this one stood out to me. Surrounded by so many memories and heroic accounts, I couldn’t help but think of the 9-11 first responders, and how they must have looked up at their fiery, insurmountable assignment and felt somewhat small; perhaps recalling their childhoods briefly or their own children, before walking head-on into the chaos. I’ve fought one large fire in my life, but I knew I’d come out alive (there were firemen there with me).

I tried to give this shot a front page look, applying more sharpening than I normally would, and a smoky color patina.
